I simulated the same problem using both wire beam and shell elements. The model is a cylinder of length = 100 , thickness = 0.05 and radius = 2. One end is fixed and the other is free. A displacement load in x-direction of 27 is applied on free edge. For shell element S4R elements are used and for the beam element quadratic beam elements. My goal is to check if these two formulations give the same results. However , I created free body cut ( at half of the length) to check if moment and reaction forces are the same. There is a difference between 2 models. Why shell formulation is not close to the beam one?
Have you done either way after cutting as you mentioned there...
In my opinion, the discrepancy at 4% for such different models is quite acceptable. It should be noted that approximate equilibrium condition M=F*L/2 is almost perfectly satisfied in both cases. The great deflection (27) suggests that Nlgeom should be turned on in Abaqus, and Euler's elastica exact solution (via elliptic functions) must be considered for beam model.
