I have heard a lot about the impossibility of detecting sex of gynodioecious papaya by any possible means at the nursery stage. Is it really so? i have tried googling but in vain further increasing my curiosity. I think Hawaii may have answers since they are the pioneers in papaya breeding. Can somebody clarify me about this sex determination issue? Thank you very much.

Papaya has male, female and hermafrodite plants; however, hermafrodite plants are preferred by commercial growers. Usually, producers have to plant seedlings and thin out unwanted plants 3 to 4 months later. The use of molecular markers have been investigated to be used as an alternative to sex identification.

Thank you Maria and Jorge but you both have emphasized on molecular markers based studies which for a commercial nursery would be difficult to perform and confirm. Instead are there any morphological or physiological markers which can be used for sex identification....Further Maria compared to hermaphrodite female are mostly preferred to prevent carpelloidy....
