While fabricating a metal oxide semiconductor field effect transistor (MOSFET) or metal semiconductor field effect transistor (MESFET), semi-insulating (SI) substrates are used. What is the principal reason for using the SI materials as substrates?

Note: I am not talking about an insulating layer between the gate electrode and the channel region for a MOSFET. I also attach a MOSFET structure for reference.
