I would like to ask you whether it is applicable to use a second order factor during EFA and CFA and not in SEM causal model. More analytically, I created a second order factor connected to 4 subscales in CFA and then in the research model I employed only the 4 subscales created via data imputation process in AMOS. When I retained the second order, model fit was below the threshold but when I dropped out the single factor and used just the 4 subscales, model fit increased. Is it valid, aiming for a publication, to use second order methodology in CFA but not during causal model building? I would appreciate your opinion. Thank you in advance.
