Hi People. I need information about the safety (hand saw break) problems caused by handsaw blades made in High Speed Steel, and also if there is any standard that say that this blades produce more safety problems than bimetal handsaw blades?
The short answer is that high speed steel is too brittle to be used alone for applications where there will be a lot of forces perpendicular to the blade, as would be the case with a hand saw. When brittle materials fail, they fail catastrophically and abruptly, as cracks can propagate with great speed. Backing the brittle cutting edge with more resilient material allows the cutting edge to crack at various places along the blade without diminishing the safety or function of the blade. A single piece high speed steel blade would fail with the least bit of abuse.
