very interesting question, with rapid change in land use and land cover change the quality of surface and ground waters is going down day by day. Intensive agriculture through addition of high amounts of micro-nutrients pose a problem of land and water degradation. The improper disposal of solid and liquid wastes is also a threat. Mine spoils/wastes, infra-structure development, damage of drainage and acquifer recharge systems happening at a faster rate. Water and land degradation happening at an alarming rates, EIA procedures not systematically followed. Proper land and water conservation techniques to be adopted on priority basis.
Researchers and planners and administrators looking on this problem and undetaking steps for eco-conservation and safeguarding human health.

Scarcity of sweet, potable water is a growing problem in large parts of the world. Desalination could be an answer but is usually expensive and cannot be sustained. WHO has engaged systematically with the efforts to achieve the Millennium Development Goals. Its Health and Development Department directs the Organization's efforts in this area. As a core activity, WHO is supporting National Sustainable Development Strategies that support health, especially those aimed at reducing health inequalities resulting from environmental and social determinants. These include water resources management, and drinking-water supply and sanitation.
