Has anybody tried isolating RNA from formaldehyde-fixed bacteria, ideally not paraffin-embedded but just in solution? Is the integrity preserved, i.e. clear peaks for the ribosomal RNAs, especially after withdrawel of the formaldehyde? Is storage time an issue? Thanks a lot!

I have no personal experience, but I know companies such as Qiagen and Roche sell kits specfic for RNA extraction from FFPE samples so I "imagine" the kit would work with just fixed/preserved samples.
I have seen publications where groups have extracted RNA from such samples and I have been interested in this topic as I'd like to be able to extract RNA from frozen tissue sections.

thanks a lot for your answer. I have tried those kits before for formaldehyde-fixed leukocytes but not very successfully. I would be delighted for some experiences with bacteria as they might behave differently in terms of endogenous RNases, RNA stability etc.
