Many worldwide publishers are requesting to eliminate millions of papers from Researchgate on behalf of author rights. And look: RG is not a nonprofit foundation. So, who´s unfair?
RG is a network that has helped a lot with regard to dissemination of information and knowledge of both projects and research. On the one hand the authors are quite right, but on the other, imagine how it would be difficult to spread the information and knowledge including if only authors were the only ones allowed to make their publications! However, although it has greatly helped the netizens the publications of the researchers the authors' decisions must be respected.
Rg is a social network that has helped many researchers to develop their knowledge and field of research both project and research. On the other hand I respect the authors' decision, partly because they have reason, but in another, each researcher has the opportunity and the right to publish some document article or any document that they have investigated thoroughly so that others who do not know can learn a little more and be filled with knowledge.
RG is a very important open space for learning, for the development of research and for socialization with other people. When you are debating a topic or conducting an investigation your opinion or result as the case may be coincidental may coincide with that of another person and that is not violating the copyright of another person, although this must be respected at any time .
ResearchGate provides a professional network for the scientific community to connect with each other to share and discuss research, the use it to collaborate, share results and drive progress.
Copyrights must be respected, in the case of RG, some member of this one may have published as a reference some article of interest of another author, which does not mean that he is violating the copyright. Here I leave a link related to this topic to deepen about copyright. https://es.slideshare.net/jordigraells/derechos-de-autor-y-propiedad-intelectual-en-entornos-digitales-y-colaborativos-cmo-citar-documentos-en-creative-commons?qid=274e0110-071a-45ad-b294-1ce1f174adc2&v=&b=&from_search=2
Who is unfair? Well that depends on the point of view that we look at it, in the case of authors RG is unfair because copyright must be respected and to publish it must have the necessary permissions granted by the journals or by the authors themselves. On the other hand, in the case of the research community it is not advantageous because they are depriving them of a high amount of knowledge and research necessary for their development.
This is a very sensitive issue since the person who owns the copyright is the one who will receive the benefits of such research or discovery, so that nobody runs the risk of publishing a new discovery without first having the copyright because another person could appropriate his discovery
I believe that copyrights can not avoid the publication of articles in RG as such, but they do allow to maintain and protect the documents regarding their authorship. It is an aspect that RG has in mind.
I agree with Esteban Blanco, For me, it depends on what sense you give, if we talk about lucrative, formal, it is true that researchgate is appropriating knowledge that does not belong, however, if we think with the idea of nurturing young researchers and researchers with this knowledge, really who is the bad guy
The violation of copyright has been theme of debate since ever .The publisher has always the right over his creation ,but lets think if every publisher restrict the use of their creations, they themselfs restrict the progress of the society.I recommend the view of Everything is a Remix ,this is a material that goes deeper about this .
Indeed copyright should be never broken even if RG is a non-profit foundation that wields the idea of a world where information reach to all of us in same conditions and is a fact that it accomplish this quest with high standards making impossible to earn money with the privatization of the knowledge but looking some steps back RG does not steal files from your computer or free vital information about any private business so if this people want to remove they papers from this page this is because they upload and share them in some point so let's be mature and grateful, this information is now owned by community an only because now worth something it should not be claimed.
There is a huge list of websites that pirates knowledge as commodity, RG does not apply for this list.
Rg allows researchers to publish their research and provide information to those interested, but at the same time it is important to respect the rights of authors to avoid confusion and plagiarism in the work of each researcher
I believe that copyright should be respected both in RG and in the other pages that provide information for our investigations. But when referencing the use of an article by another author, copyright is not violated.
It is vitally important to give each publication its own value and to gain prestige at the research level, as it is a bit more cooperative when looking for some information, so each researcher would take advantage of the facilities and credibility in the articles of the most prestigious authors, achieving that Your research will take place around prestigious authors and end with the desired quality. Copyright protects the form and not the ideas, however novel and brilliant, and grants property rights (moral and patrimonial) over literary, scientific or artistic creations. The expression of the personality of the author is understood as moral rights (does not imply remuneration). The economic right is distinguished by being exclusive, transferable, waivable, and of limited duration (implies remuneration).
I think it is quite unfair, because being a RG a nonprofit collaboration page faborece the development and research and limit it to pener copyright I think you will lose the interest of many
I believe that copyright is something important for development, but not for this page that is non-profit and only to increase knowledge and a great method of research
Question is not clear to me. Do you mean the copyright hold by the publisher of the journal? Authors will not object for more spread of his/her articles through Research Gate. Only the publisher of the journals can raise objection for fear of loss of business by sailing the PDF of the articles or due to spread of many open access journals which are either free or take a minimum amount of money.
I am sorry I couldn´t forward your request before. A personal emergency put me off any connexion.
So, coming back to the question, you may know some publising houses are demanding RG to unpublish million of papers. They argued they manage a publishing agreement with authors, known as author´s rights. If demands are allowed, many authors could stop publishing their contributions in RG for free.
However, RG is not a non-free foundation. RG profits last year were up to 20 millions dollars. That´s why, I made my question and put all facts, to know your view. Thanks for your support.
I do not think it would be in good taste that a person who has developed a project with sacrifice, does not own the copyright of it, and today there are many people dedicated to this theft of information.
