I like the answer given by Professor Kjartan Skogly Kversøy adding to that in terms of early-career academics are trying to settle in a job position, they may be asked to do teaching, researching or do both together. If you choose, teaching as the main responsibility, then research life may suffer or vise versa. This means it is all about the choices we make and best suit our talents. I always believe without having research, teaching may not improve. Therefore, it is good to do both to some extent to be competitive as Kjartan Skogly Kversøy

Research professor is a rank that usually carries only research duties with limited obligation for teaching. So from a general perspective i can possibly say that the task of research supervision is certainly interpreted as research expedition where nascent or new researchers are contributing on different projects. But i also cannot ignore that many universities contain toxic settings in combination with complex authoritative elements regarding research scenario. Commonly, there are incomprehensible requests made of academics in cases of research expeditions and teaching practices. At the end, i would partially agree, but not in all circumstances, that to seek after an enthusiasm for research expedition, you may not be best set in academia environment.

Dear Abdul Kuddus, When the earliest universities were created, what distinguished them from the other schools was their universality, their endeavour to embrace the whole knowledge of mankind (so, they were called universities). Ernest Boyer (1997) talks about the richness of the role of the professor, or scholar, insisting on the need for a more inclusive view of what it means to be a scholar: a recognition that knowledge is acquired and propagated through research, integration, teaching, and practice. University professors are required to teach, conduct research, secure research funds, supervise graduate students thesis, participate in university committees, and provide industrial and community service,

Promotion require good performance on all of the above. Teaching is subject to review of course portfolio, assessment of objectives and outcomes, students evaluation and peer review visit in the class room.

Scholarly work is mainly published in peer review and cited and indexed international journals and specialized conferences. For the purpose of promotion, a dossier of published research Is sent to a group of international experts for peer review and recommendation, etc.

on the other hand, there is a category of full time researchers dedicated only for resewrch work. Such specialized research centers donot require from their researcher any work other than conducting research.

professor can take sabbatical leave from a university to work full time on reseerch work. Such researchers can go back to teach.

Firstly, it is important to appreciate the difference between research led and teaching led Universities.

In the USA only 1500 out of 4500 Universities offer PhD programs and often have fewer Masters courses. Teaching Universities thus often have faculty who primarily teach. Professional updating and scholarship is not research it is keeping abreast of knowledge. Curriculums are standardized and allow little flexibility. Many courses are based on text books.

In contrast research intensive Universities, have faculty who do research and this is a key component in developing curriculums. Academics thus produce new knowledge and disseminate knowledge. Teaching will primary incorporate journal readings and texts of scholars.

This divide is a USA characteristic, as the majority of UK and EU Universities have evolved teaching at UG PG and PhD levels.

What we understand as Universities now is different to their original goal. Their role was very much providing education and scholarship for aristocrats in EU, and to stress duty and obligations in supporting the nation. Many universities also established as religious centres such as El Azar in Cairo, and divinity, theology, philosophy are embedded in institutions formed in middle aged, though El Azar was formed in 800 hundreds.

Universities are now moving towards teaching factories, and many new Universities have limited subjects including business, engineering and medicine.....this foundation will not create a University that is a research centre, and will suffer in University rankings. Arts, literature, culture, and subject domains of history, philosophy, economics, politics help build lifeblood of a university...

So... Universities that have instructors, or academics will have a very different learning experience. The jury's out though, research universities ranked higher. This is unfair as specialist education colleges are often brilliant, as rankings are comparing apples and oranges, and as a consequence disadvantage smaller colleges.

What is the purpose of a university?

It's important to appreciate how universities evolved as this impacts greatly their role. Many unis were viewed as places of learning, and attendees had responsibility to disseminate knowledge.

Just to illustrate how education is viewed and has developed let's look at numbers. You need to evaluate the country first to see historical development.

Of UKs approx 150 higher education institutions (some called college) 95 per cent offer UG, PG, and PhD.

In USA, only 1000 of 4000 universities provide UG, PG and PhD. In USA therefore they are teaching based, and in UK unis are viewed as teaching and research.

An instructor is a teacher, and often only has Masters. An academic, has a PhD illustrating they are conversant with knowledge construction. There is expansive debate on this in higher education/teaching journals.

An academic is thus someone can develop curricula and teach, the dissemination role which was central to many of the world's early unis El Azur in Cairo, 8th century for example.

An academic is now viewed as a teacher/educator and is responsible for creating new knowledge, research, as well as knowledge dissemination.

Older unis tend to have greater commitiment to research.

In research intensive unis you are required to teach and research, but there are some unis who provide teaching focused contracts, and also sciences. Sciences historically employ more research assistants.

To be decisive.

In a research intensive university you expect to be taught by scholars . Myself included.

The idea of subject updating is not often followed through. If you have no passion for subject, and are not citing latest work you are not really a professor

Education and research are important and complement each other. If combined and integrated effectively, they could lead to quality learning outcomes.

Fascinating article Azm. These issues surprisingly have not been appreciated in every country. We need to consider status of Organization and gov policy. Privates for profit, private non profit, public create many different dynamics. Online learning often packaged as a learning set/resource is not attractive to many. In fact online learning is attractive to workers to do minimum, because they need certificate.

And then we look at rankings and accreditation..and a whole new industry that is trying to compare apples and oranges.

Sad times indeed. I am an academic who can teach and research...some prefer teaching, others researching. But we have so many complex partners now, that student learning experience is being forgotten, as value, outputs, returns on investment..... the en masse Financialization of education, and webs of power

Dear Abdul Kuddus teaching and research works form the bedrocks of any University system. I understand that we all have our preferences But research work makes teaching easy, enjoyable and more practical. A teacher who carry out research in the same field is likely to teach with personal examples and more recent studies. On the other hand, a researcher should be interested in passing across knowledge to the next generation by thorough teaching skills.

A research professor is a full professor with few or no teaching obligations.

Because of the more prestigious and meritorious nature of research,

research professors tend to be more recognised researchers than the average full professor, usually researchers of high standing in the international research community. In many cases such a professorship is broadly comparable to, or even a form of, a distinguished professorship.
