I am an Australia-based academic needing to interview participants located in Indonesia as part of my research project. I aim to remain in Australia and interview participants remotely using Zoom or Skype. I know that a research permit and research visa would be required if I travelled to Indonesia to undertake face-to-face interviews (Covid-19 not withstanding). However, I am finding it hard to get any clarity as to whether a permit is required for data collection in my circumstances. Would appreciate any help or advice on this matter.
Hi Tim, I don't know exactly about the permit if you want to interview through online platform. But I think it is possible for you to collect the information via zoom or any other platform. The problem is the internet connections in some rural areas is not stable., and you have to identify first your respondents - those who can understand English. If you can provide your ethics for the survey, the purposes and of course your questionnaires, I think you can go through. Or it is also possible to send the questionnaire via email. In my understanding, first you should find a partner (institution) that relate to your study to make collaboration with and to get legal permit. Later, a research ethics clearance can be gotten from a research ethical clearance body that available in research agencies in Indonesia.
