I was doing research on soil arthropod ecology. I randomly sampled 3 fields in a season and 2 fields in the other season. Now I want to compare population parameters sampled between two seasons. I want to know if the simple ANOVA is to be applied here or not - because somebody just hinted to me that repeated measures ANOVA is to be applied here because samples are from two different times. What should I do?
Repeated measures ANOVAs are used when you take repeated measurements of the same unit of replication. In this case, your unit of replication is field and you didn't measure the same fields in both seasons.

The one-way repeated-measures ANOVA compares several means, when those means have come from the same participants; for example, if you measured arthropod variety of each field for each month over a year-long course.
As Dylan mentioned earlier, it does not apply in your case.
Just to add, since you did not measure the fields during the same season, there is no uniform platform for comparing the fields thus suggesting a problem in the project design.
But what if I collect equal number of replicate samples from the same sampling stations during different seasons (for eg. triplicate samples from three stations during three seasons).?
