faults in geology generally represents of zone of weakness in which there can be leakages of underground minerals. Using remote sensing data e.g imagery, is there any way whereby the fault that leads to the leakage of oil and gas can be differentiated from the faults of underground water or how can I identify various minerals with their specific faults pattern.

Dear Aransiola, the researches from UFRGS, in Brazil, have developed an study where the lithology is automated identified through the use of sensors board in an UAV. Depending on the sensor used, it is possible to notice differences among elements that the naked eye cannot see. I hope my clue help your studies. Check their project below. Best regard.

remote sensing is an efficient tool to cover an area within a reasonable period of time, given you have been in the field and calibrated your tools. Systems only will recognize minerals, weathering zone/ soils and vegetation when you have keyed in the database so as to discriminate them in the field (capturing digital data in the field) or from airborne devices or satellites. The system will deliver data sets or color composites which you can match with a certain mineral when well defined digital data are available and the boundaries between them are precisely set. I was in an office until my retirement where combined studies with ground follow-up calibration have been carried out using fresh rocks, weathered rocks and gossans. All of the results obtained can be used only if you have a good field experience or in combination with the classical work. Neither capturing data in the field nor by remote sensing devices can be considered as the philosopher´s stone nor a substitute for knowledge and experience gathered through time. It is the futile attempt to take the field into the lab onto the PC in order to save time and money and compensate for the lack of field experience. The same holds true for those who want replace a good mineralogical and petrographic field and laboratory work by indiscriminate sampling of a vast amount of samples and put them through the analytical pipeline of geochemistry. It is enough for a paper but nothing else.
It remains a tool that needs to be hooked up with field geology and mineralogy. Even portable device of XRF and UV spectroscopy only deliver results which have later be verified by laboratory techniques.

In general remote sensing methods for identifying or accurately mapping faults are mainly magnetic, VLF-EM and electric resistivity. Usually a combination of two or more can provide optimum results especially for faults that are not identified by geological mapping. In my opinion the identification of minerals, water etc in fault zones depends on the variation of their magnetic or electromagnetic properties in respect to the ones of the surrounding rocks. Good knowledge and interpretation of the collected data can help to their identification.
