I have to performed turning experiments on some materials by using some parameters. But the work is specific to the chosen materials and cutting insert. Therefore, the selected parameters and the effects/sensitivities are also very specific. So what is the general knowledge to be conveyed from this work?

From my point of view, you can select an insert for turning operations in differents ways. For example, by modifying depth of cut and feed you can find the chipbreaker diagram, this is the working area where the chipbreaker will guarantee the break of chip, will guarantee to obtain chip with "number six" shapes (if you want see the figure attach). This geometry of insert allow to produce continuously, without machine stops.
In another sense, if you need that insert produce a good roughness, is essential to measure with a rugosimether the surface value. In this case, the roughness is affected by point radius of insert, feed and type of material.
Another idea is in relation with the tool life. You can select an insert. Then you have made the turning trials, but in each one, over each material, you can measure the evolution of wear over cutting edge. At the same cutting speed, the better insert wear ratio is lower.
Tool insert selection depends on material, its mechanical properties and cutting parameters. Also, the machining conditions and surface quality should be considered. In rough machining maximum chip volume in per time is desired. If fine machining is performed cutting speed can be select higher and feedrate must be low, so surface roughness can be obtanined in desired range. The catalogues prepared by tool manufacturers can be accepted as a specific tool selection guide for a known material.
Finishing inserts need positive geometry, lower point radius, and PVD coating is better than CVD.
Roughing inserts need greater point radius, in some cases chamfer edge and negative geometry is better than positive.
