I wish to see the effect of TNF alpha on rat oligodendrocytes in different stages, i have a recombinant human TNF alpha, since it shares 71-92% aminoacid sequence in ECD with that of rat, i should be able to use it, right?
However, I wanted to ask you all here who have been working previously with recombinant items, what difference does it make with regard to the results we get while using those meant for other species and if it is allright to move on with that i have in hand or order for the specific species that i am working with?

Dear Sanjaya,
Human TNF-alpha is active on murine cells with a slightly reduced specific activity. I don't know if it works on rat cells. I guess you need to try it (not sure what your readout is), so a quick ELISA on a target protein or apoptosis/necrosis assay.
In general, there are some cytokines which preserved between species, some are not crossreactive, and some only in the one or other direction.
Always check literature first (often companies who sell cytokines/proteins will state crossreactivity), there you will find clues.
