The "Ease of doing" research is, of late, a hidden phenomenon. The researcher has to work for a firm or an NGO or Government sector, then naturally he/she is bound by the regulations of the funding agency.
Just like Freelance journalist, freelance researcher would be ideal but finance matters.But it is missing. Let's start the discussion
I have been doing a lot of Research and Publishing while holding a day job. A lot of my research work flows from my job. While it is valued by practitioners, academics do not take my writings too seriously,unfortunately.
It sounds an interesting discussion. What will happen to those sectors at university. If it is not a company or the government, it would be from university... I suppose it would be similar...

This is a very good and interesting discussion. There are three major problems in this area for Researcher
1. Funding of the research (Finance) you said it
2. Non-Availability of Data, Lack of Cooperation and Disclosure of information by the Companies and Issue of Confidentiality on the company's financial reporting data for research purpose.
3. Bridging the Gap between the Academics, Professionals and Government (Town and Gown Cooperation) to enhance practicality of the research findings. This will not allow the findings of the research to lie on the shelves without practical implementation.
