I am running a study which requires two visits for children to complete an EEG (Brain scan) and an eye tracking task. We are currently working a recruitment plan for after the Covid-19 Pandemic. I have only done this once during my masters and this was in England. I was wondering what is a successful method of recruiting children within this age range to commit to our research?
I have currently:
Flyers on mums groups (social media)
Flyers through colleagues
Brief School presentations (if ethically approved and approved by head teacher)
Ideally, it would be cool to have a form of media to get feedback rather than just sending out flyers in hopes of recruitment. All suggestions and criticism welcome.
Just to note: I am not recruiting or seeing participants whilst Government (Covid -19) restrictions are in place!
Your strategies to date seem very sound. I would add that if you have any public health outreach programs (such as Community Health Reps in tribal lands here in the US or our County Health Nurses Programs), they also have access to this population. Adding outreach to local pediatricians (and their afflicted organizations), any therapies that provide home visiting services, and any related service health providers, that may be helpful as well. Not sure of your health care system but our health/insurance plans, especially for our Medicaid low income population have been awesome recruitment partners in the past. And I would add any early childhood advocacy organizations. We also did recruitment at child care centers for the very young children (4's and 5's) as well as simple outreach flyers posted in common area throughout our comunities (e.g., laundrymats, grocery store bulletin boards). I have also seen recruitment done by buying advertising at local theaters to run ads before movies start. But given my age, those in-person strategies were long before social media was born. (LOL!) I have had luck approaching heads of schools. If you can get the head enthusiastic about the project, it is a real boon. Public education & parochial schools give a much more representative sample than private schools.

As the project deals with clinical examinations and required parents' consent, I would suggest to get in contact with trustable paediatricians, having them on board. The second step would be a community engagement activity, following the approach well detailed by Glenn Laverack in his last book. Community need to be engaged through their own social channels. Get into the community to appraise whether your project meet any of their needs and help them to find the right way to answer those needs.
