Light is inevitable for the process of photosynthesis reaction. Naturally sunlight plays the vital role for this process. Light may be of different colours like white, red, yellow, blue etc. However, is the rate of photosynthesis depend on different colour?

An excessive amount of light can damage PSII complexes in plants and cyanobacteria, a commonly occurring process known as photoinhibition. This phenomenon explicitly affects the PSII, damaging and degrading the essential protein, which would inhibit the water-splitting function of the PSII, thereby inhibiting photosynthesis. As a result, a repair cycle must be initiated to replace the photodamaged PSII complexes. Illumination of red light facilitates this repair cycle, and therefore red light wavelengths are crucial in maintaining photosynthetic reactions.

Different colours have different wavelengths and in plant cells, chorophyll pigment systems 1&2 have particular wavelength absorbances due to which we have different absorption spectrum and action spectrum and effects the photosynthesis accordingly.
