In practice, I use the Personality Self Portrait. It gives percentages on 14 personality scales such as Conscientious, Aggressive, Solitary, Dramatic, Idiosyncratic, etc. The PSP is based on the DSM IV and has both an adult and a child version. I like it because it shows how different aspects of personality can influence areas of life such as school, work and relationships. It does not evaluate behavior, but can give insight into how personality can impact it. There is a companion book called "The New Personality Self Portrait," you can find on Amazon or other book retailers. Self scoring is a little tedious, but it also has a computer generated score application we use in our office. I find it valuable that the book not only gives the positive aspects and strengths of the person, but you can understand how one personality dynamic may conflict with another. For instance, if a child or adult scores high on both conscientious and leisurely, it could cause he or she to want to be responsible and yet not have the drive to follow through, which in turn could cause some cognitive dissonance or friction in relationships for not keeping promises. The book also delves into how an excess in an area may manifest in a tendency towards a certain personality disorder(s).

Both FIRO and PSP sound interesting methods and I will try to study both methods more and see if they can be used in my future studies. However I’m uncertain will those fit in to my current study. I would love to have method that I can give kindergarten teachers to evaluate children’s behavior and also use same method to be used with college students. On college students the idea is to be able to study how others (peers) perceive behavioral or personality changes of test subject under different conditions (e.g. sleep deprivation).
