selection of a kind of reactor is always a matter of credo. First it is choose whether to use a mixer type (autoclave) reactor r a once (or more times) through reactor. Than you have to choose the way of heating and cooling and than whether to lay or stand your device. So whatever you consider will be the choice!

How fast is your reaction?  Is it highly exothermic?  If it is very fast and there is high heat generation, then it is safer to use a plug flow system.  Generally the choice of reactor is determined by the reaction kinetics and not the requirement for heat control.  Fed-batch reactors are used when there is significant reactant inhibition, and it is important to maintain a low reagent concentration.  Batch vessels have poor heat transfer characteristics and it is easy to have runaway reaction conditions.  In cases where there is extreme exothermicity, I prefer a series of CSTRs rather than a single reactor.  In this case you can minimise the reactor volume in which there are high concentrations of reagents.

"The choice of a suitable reactor for the chemical process depends on: the type of the reaction/reactions (rate, yield selectivity), type of substrates, type of products, the thermal effects, the ways  of heat exchange, production volume, catalyst used, accompaniing effects as phase transition, inter and intra particle diffusion, inter and intraparticle heat transfer etc etc, etc."

This phrase can be found in any book on chemical reactor engineering.

You wrote that you know (you know, not me) heat of reaction, estimated cooling capacity and, I guess, the kinetic equation.

It's not enough to propose the correct solution.

Thank you very much for your response. I agree with you on the aforementioned points. 

However my query was how to apply this reaction kinetics data in the selection or  designing of process reactors?

Additionally I would also like to ask what more information do we need to arrive at the correct solution?

As I feel that The reaction kinetics play a significant role in the heat generation,

As heat generation create some pressure in the reactor

We can find how much pressure is released or evolved with the respected reaction, So we can get to know whether the reactor is capable of sustaining that pressure, if any gaseous reactions are there with the gas evolution kit we can how much gas is liberating, how much pressure that it will create, These are my approaches to the aforementioned scenarios.

So, Could you suggest me any alternative approaches to make the proper reactor selection.

Since in flow systems can occur runawey and hot spots in PFR OK.

Since the production scale is relatively small. OK

Since the gaseous products are formed. OK

Since you want to remove one or more products during the reaction (reversible reaction) and, in particular, gaseous products. OK

Since you want to reduce the thermal effect per time (reduce the temperature rise and pressure rise) gradually dosing one of the substrates. OK

Since the process is conducted in liquid phase with catalyst added,  for example, homogeneous catalysis.  OK                                                                                        Since the mixing is required in the process. OK ect.

Semi batch reactions don't reach completion unless a hold time is applied after the feed is stopped. In some reactions like polymers the form of the product is changed by the choice of reactors. When the choice doesn't affect quality or composition then safety and economics are the deciding factors.

Product distribution among the desired and undesired product is also need to be considered while choosing between CSTRs in series and PFR if reaction is exothermic or series/parallel
