R2A agar plates pH is dropping from 7 to 6 after gamma irradiation (15-25KGy). How to stabilize pH??

In the course of our experiments, we noted decrease in the pH of R2A agar plates from 7 to 6 subsequent to exposure to gamma irradiation within the range of 15-25 kGy. What could be the reason for this and how can we avoid this?
