In my opinion, the response of Dr. García-Alvarado should be read in its entirety and not a single sentence. I believe that he refers to the multidisciplinary characteristic of IE and how desirable it would be for engineering in general.

We educate engineers to complete their degree and work in industry, whatever this industry is. Therefore I agree that term Industry Engineer is rather a loose one.

My understanding of the term industrial engineering, is that it covers time study plus process flow and motion study. Industrial engineers are therefore quite distinct from production engineers and maunfacturing systems engineers, who's primary focus tends to be the deployed realisation of production technologies.

That said, there is considerable benefit in: ergonomisit,s metrologists, mechanical engineers, integrated engineers and production engineer's understanding the core pricipals of Industrial Engineering. Yet time and motion studies that may impact indvidual pay and employment conditions , should only be undertaken by trained and certifed Industrial Engineers or time study specialists (in non industrial environments).

For each engineer it may not be feasible to study Industrial Engineering due to work environment, different branches of engineering with specific objectives, interest in work related to industry etc. However, knowledge of Industrial Engineering and experience in industry environment is very essential to make him capable in facing challenges in industry where interdisciplinary activities are involved in complex work process involving modern equipment and control systems.

The start of chemical industries instruction needs to include two important topics. The first one is the meaning of chemical process. The second is related to the classifications of industries. The classification is going with two ways the first one is according to its’ stage as primary, secondary and tertiary industries with the advantages of each stage, while the second one is according to the different types of industries. It is important to select the industries that covers the chemical engineering aspects in one side and in the other side is to be according to your society requirements. Normally the beginning of chemical industries after the above introduction need to be going with different water types industries, gases industries (Oxygen, Nitrogen, Acetylene); chemicals like acids (Sulphuric and Phosphoric acids), Ammonia; construction materials like different kinds of cement, brick, thermostone, glass; food industries like dairy products and different types of drinks, fertilizers, detergents, green and eco-industries like recycling industries; power stations and boiler systems and papers with tissues.

I don't find it necessary to agree with absolute statements like that, although I would certainly agree that there are big overlaps among the engineering disciplines. And sometimes, the overlaps are not even obvious, until after they have occurred.

One topic of study in industrial engineering is graph theory. Things like min cost flow models. Imagine how cool it was, when this very subject matter became the foundation of Internet routing algorithms? Who would have thought that a text book from 1962, or so, Ford and Fulkerson's Flows in Networks, would be so instrumental in the development of the Internet, about 20 years later?

Industrial Engineering is largely common sense and tells you how to be systematic in planning. I believe good public domain software are available. No need to make it necessary to attend a course for all Engineers.

I think every design engineer should have a good understanding of how the product is made, how easily it can be produced, and how much cost the product features add. In that sense, I agree that Industrial Engineering is an important discipline for all engineers.

There are many IE methods that affect the development of products in many industries. Therefore, I think that knowing at least the basics of Industrial Engineering is a must, no matter the industry that you are working. Be it basic ergonomics, optimization algorithms, methods to control the costs, or the basics of Taylor's laws, all engineers can benefit from knowing IE.

Industrial Engineering(IE) cuts across all field of engineering. IE will help address tactical and strategic issues in any organization (product or service based). According to Victor Dorel Calatoru, I feel it is very important to have at least basic knowledge of IE irrespective of your field of study.

I agree with most of the reoplies. As most engineers know, the degree just gives you the tools to learn whatever you need to actually do in your job. I spent most of my engineering career in small manufacturing companies, and learned all the industrial engineering OJT.

IMNSHO, there are only 5 "real" engineering disciplines,

Electrical,

Computer (I used to think that was part of electrical, but they have divided so much, it deserves its own category for sure)

Mechanical,

Chemical,

and Civil,

and there is a lot of overlap even among those. Things like "aerospace," is a specialization of mechanical. "Environmental" a combo of chemical and civil, and "manufacturing/industrial" is an application of any of those depending on what the company is manufacturing.

Several replies have hit on an important fact: engineers are taught how to design the Product but seldom taugh much about how the Product is made. Understanding IE theory, how a process will need to be designed in order to successfully build and test the Product, would help engioneers do a better job of designing for manufacturing.

Absolutely. IE is the whole solution & it is important to see how the different Engineering disciplines make up the whole picture.

Industrial engineering is such a complete specialty that, I have come to believe, all professionals need to know at least the way they order processes.

Some facets of Industrial engineering are extremely important to engineers. One that immediately comes to mind is ergonomics. When designing machinery and processes, making sure that they are ergonomically responsible is extremely important.

Another overlooked skill that I believe most engineers need to study is how to interact with the machinery from a maintenance perspective. Too often new equipment is designed and built in a shop without regard to final placement within a facility. I have personally had machinery show up with access doors and panels located in such a position that they face the wall or other equipment. I have also had equipment that had to be completely disassembled to replace a wear part that had to be replaced every 100 hours.

Having a healthy regard for the end user and maintenance person is something that should not be overlooked in an engineers education.

No doubt IE is an important subject for many engineering disciplines such as Chemical Engineering, Ship Building Engineering, Aviation Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, ...etc. However there are some engineering disciplines such as Public Works or environmental & Sanitary Engineering, its significance is much reduced.

Usually, each engineering area has its industrial side. It is why the absolute career mathematical model of all the engineering part of an university is the same. However, the specialization in Industrial Engineering may, depending on the university organization which might differ from one to another, be a stand alone one too.

It may not be right to say EVERY Engineer should study Industrial Engineering in its entirety, however, a form of integrated learning which incorporates the basis of IE should be included in the specialized engineering curriculum.

There are many areas in IE which may not be helpful to some fields, however, incorporating relevant areas in IE to specializations in other fields will be of great help. For example, incorporating ergonomics, new product development and quality function deployment in Mechanical Engineering design etc.

Most of the core engineering have the role of IE. But it may not be right to say every engineer should study Industrial engineering. Since there are few engineering disciplines in which the role IE is not of much significance. Though there is no harm to impart basic knowledge of IE to a graduate engineer.

This is Avery important question for not only those studying all engineering discipliner and an industrial employee. This has been the core interest at all studies at Aalborg University (AAU) since its auguration back in 1974.

Today AAU is -by an international asssssmetn commitee - the fourth best engineering university in the world due to its highly recommendable study form - we call it Problem Based Learning (PBL).

It has - for me - been an extremely positive experience to work with this systems since its introduction. A major benefit being that one is very close contact with student from the supervisors also learns a lot.

I would say, An engineer should be able to address multidisciplinary activities, instead of distributed approach, i feel, that gives a completeness.

I am always trying for that, i have not kept any restriction based on engineering discipline in my activities. That gives me opportunity to enjoy new things.

Seriously, I think that the term "engineer," the schools and departments granting "engineering" degrees, and the degrees being accredited by groups like ABET span far too wide a range to answer that question with a simple yes or no.

I would suggest that any person or program focused on REPETITIVE MASS PRODUCTION processes should study IE. In my field, chemical engineering, the modern principles of IE are essentially ignored in academia, and as a result, students arrive in industry without even a clear concept of what they are missing. One of Donald Rumsfeld's "unknown unknowns," I guess. During my 20-plus years in industry, I rarely encountered key IE concepts in upstream oil & gas, refining, petrochemicals, or bio-based fuels and products, the fields in which I worked. In the one case where the leader of a large R&D organization attempted to introduce just a few of the most important concepts, it was given no more than lip service, and the few changes that made any impact did not long survive the leader's departure.

Some other fields seem to have taken on board more IE principles, particularly in what my Chem. Eng. colleagues (often derisively) refer to as "widget making." But the academic direction of Chem. Eng. often sees largely useless content in partial differential equations being taught to undergraduates who then proceed to graduate with zero coursework in basic statistics, linear & nonlinear algebra, optimization, etc. Many departments have all but zero industrial experience represented in core undergraduate courses, with the result that B.S.Ch.E. programs are closer to "grad school prep" than to anything relevant to an industrial career. The mismatch between the math taught to undergraduates and the math needed by engineers in industry is but one symptom of the growing divide I have observed between faculties and industry, at least in the field of chemical engineering, with the deepest divide in the top graduate research programs.

It is only my opinion, but a Venn Diagram with one circle for "Faculty needed to carry out a top-ranked, Federally-funded graduate research program" and another for "Faculty needed to prepare undergraduates for industrial careers" would show very little intersection, and what intersection did exist would be largely coincidental.

Industrial engineering is an important subject. Toyota way should be introduced into industrial Engineering. The concepts of keizen, heijunka, kanban, genchi gembutsu are very effective.

Industrial Engineering includes many topics that are very important for engineers, such as effective utilization of resources, saving time, feasible products, equipment distribution layout, industrial flow diagrams, safety and hazards assessments, maintenance and inspections . . .

Here is the central unit that unites all engineering careers and that is the main key of the Industrial Engineering when it is mathematically solved and closed:

A process is a logical judgment of a case of study, conflict or production, between lots of others, sustained by the laws that govern the subject, object and the responsible. It is a mental property of humans first, that is managed, controlled and accelerated by the use of specific scientific techniques that are related to its elements and steps of development. Therefore, when an A is a function of B, the differentiation between them can complete the desired integral result.

An integral calculation is then the processing itself between A and B, that determines the relationship and its qualitative and/or quantitative elements. It is why, there is a definite and an infinite integrals. The difference between the latest is the presence of an interval.

A differentiation is the process, too, of having the best choice for a specific integration objective. There are always much of solutions for whatever a case is. However, the desired one stands between them.

Some of the core engineering like civil, mechanical has the important role of IE. But it may not be right to say all engineer should study Industrial engineering especially for electronics and computer engineering, robotics engineer, telecommunication engineer. they study more electrical side rather than follow IE concepts. Since there are few engineering disciplines in which the role IE is not of much significance. There is no harm to impart basic knowledge of IE to a graduate engineer. Topics like effective utilization of resources, saving time, feasible products, production demand and services(though it is different case study for different streams) , equipment distribution layout, industrial flow diagrams, safety and hazards assessments, maintenance and inspections are important for almost all engineering background professionals. Case study and plant layout even differs for different engineering streams.
