"Air entrapment" defect in magnesium sand casting

Can any one explain me the reason for "air entrapment" under steel chill in magnesium sand casting?

Air entrapment takes place during filling so it does not matter if there is a chill. Also the air pocket may have been entrapped elsewhere and floated to its final location as a bubble.
