First, generate the top surface of your model, then the thickness, then the base. Ony then enter the simple grid construction workflow and declare your top and base in the workflow. Note that you will not be able to fault the grid using the simplest workflow.

For you to generate a reservoir model, you will have finish your Seismic Interpretation (i.e; picking of horizons and faults accross inlines and crosslines). The horizons are used to create time surfaces with are then converted to their corresponding depth with the aid of a quality velocity model. These depth surfaces of reservoirs (top and base) and faults are used as input during the reservoir modeling.

There are various workflow and several methods that can be adopted for generating a reservoir model. However, all of this method requires you to create a grid (which are mostly in form of squares). This grid helps in distributing upscaled properties depending on the chosen method.
