Hi guys. Recently I just started to learn how to conduct a fracture toughness test on my material. The test method I use is ASTM  D5045-14.

The yield stress of material must be used in this test. But the definition of "yield stress" described in this method is a little bit ambiguous to me. Below is a paragraph from ASTM D5045-14:

The yield stress, σy, is to be taken from the maximum

load in a uniaxial tensile test. The yield-stress test can be

performed in a constant stroke-rate uniaxial tensile test where

the loading time to yield is within +-20 % of the actual loading

time observed in the fracture test.

In the upper paragraph, it says "the loading time to yield is within +-20 % of the actual loading time observed in the fracture test". Right here, I don't understand what is the "actual loading time observed in the fracture test" means. Does "fracture test" here still means the same uniaxial test used to test the yield stress? Or it means the fracture toughness test?

And the second part is about the "actual loading time" part . What does it really refer to ?

Thanks for seeing my question.
