I have a diffractogram with five peaks from experimental XRD powder method. I´ve seen diffractograms with a few peaks been associate with a cubic structure. For exemple: NaCl, Y2O3, GaN. Can I say that my diffractogram is from a cubic structure? I aplied the rules selection from cubic structure and I determinate the parameter cell.
Surely that a diffraction pattern with little (and sharp well defined) peaks is related with a high simmetric structure, however, it can be cubic or tetragonal. You can use the free software DICVOL04 to indexed the observed peaks and unambigously determine structure and lattice parameters. Also, with this simple structure you can obtain the hkl-Miller indices with the aid of a calculator and the the expressions from Bragg´s law: 2dsin(teta)=lambda and d=1/(a^2/h^2+l^2+k^2)^1/2 or d=1/((a^2/h^2+k^2)+(c^2/l^2))1/2 (the first one for cubic and the second one for tetragonal).
