I have 2 cylindrical parts in contact: one inside the other. I suspected that the contact was asymmetric so I used marking ink on one, put them in contact and took them apart. However, I wanted to quantify the areas in actual contact (where the dye has transferred). How can I achieve this?
Usually, in this case one can formulate and solve the contact problem. Often analytycal solutions are available; if this is not possible, try to implement numerical analysys (finite element method, boundary element method).

Hi Yewande, I see that the contact area should be a rectangle, similar as the result of a cylinder on a plane. In this case the plane is also curved, so the rectangle will be wider. I did not see that calculation ever, but I would try to modifiy the "cylinder on plane" configuration using perhaps fems, not analytically. Sorry, I did not fin anything in my literature.
For a non-Hertzian concentrated contact use a semi-analytical method (SAM) or a FEM approach.

I can't see why he can not use the Hertzian line contact formula with equivalent radius R from 1/R=1/5-1/8 as the bodies are concave not convex.

Such factor we must take into account in view of strong dependence of contact pressure distribution on interacting bodies misalignment (see, f.e., the paper Zernin M.V. at al. Hydrodynamic Analysis of Friction Bearings. Part 1: Consideration of Noncylindrical Working Surfaces // Journal of Friction and Wear. – 2014. – Vol. 35, No. 5. – Р. 396–406).
Evidently, this peculiarity of contact interaction became a reason of previos discussion about FEM applicability.
