1) Tests for funnel plot asymmetry should be used only when there are at least 10 studies included in the meta-analysis, because when there are fewer studies the power of the tests is too low to distinguish chance from real asymmetry.

2) Begg test has the same statistical problems but lower power than the test of Egger (usually more than 25 studies, you can choose the results of Begg)

3) Statistical test is more accurate than visual inspect.

4) Even there is a publication bias identified by test or visual inspecting, the fact is that pbulication bias exists naturally. The most important thing you should do is to make your results and conclusion stable and convincing.

What if we have less than 10 studies. There is no need to check publication bias ?

Yes! no need to check the publication bias.

You can just write in your manuscript "Since less than ten studies were included, the publication bias was not tested [Reference]".
