Productivity is key to development and is considered a very important factor to induce better living standards. But how can we improve productivity? Where - exactly - does it come from?
Very interesting question, but let me first define the terms:
productivity is the ratio b/n efficiency and effectiveness.
According to ISO 9000:2015. Quality management systems — Fundamentals and vocabulary (3.7 Terms related to result):
efficiency - relationship between the result achieved and the resources used;
effectiveness - extent to which planned activities are realized and planned results are achieved.
The history of operations management (look at snap bellow taken from Stevenson, 2015) shows that productivity is an issue from Adam Smith (1776) till nowadays.
WW2 developed new scientific field "Operations research" (based on early works of Babbage, Charles (1832). On the Economy of Machinery and Manufactures) - Battle of Britain (1941) and Battle of Normandy (1944) are most common examples how advanced analytical methods are helping on taking better decisions.
Almost in the same time (1937-1946) Atanasoff-Berry-Computer was built.
In the 60's was created MRP-software (Material requirements planning) by Joseph Orlicky, which evolved to MRP2 (Manufacturing resource planning) in 80's and nowadays we are speaking of ERP (Enterprise resource planning), cloud computing, etc.
Furthermore, the recent concept in operations management is "lean" that includes TPM (Total productivity management).
This short historical overview shows that every period has its own achievements speaking about productivity.
Thank you very much for your attention and a "so good explaned" answer. I´ll look with more care about what you´ve said and read the historical dev you´ve attached.
