I suggest you browse the internet for journals which deal with mineral deposits such as Ore Geology Reviews, Mineralium Deposita, or Economic Geology. Here you will find some information about the deposit or mining district you are going to target upon. the chemical and mineralogical data. Then direct your view towards the applied economic geology and mining industry (Journal of Mining Science, Applied Sciences, Applied Earth Science, (Transactions of the Institutions of Mining and Metallurgy), Erzmetall (GDMB), CIM Bulletin. Here you should be closest to your problem. And last-but-not least have a look at the hydrological journals (Journal of Hydrology, Hydrological Sciences...). With this target-oriented approach you should come to grips with this issue and find enough examples how to tackle your problem.

Is the mine accessible to remap? Are there historical mine geology maps? If not, it is unlikely that government geological maps will be of a scale that matches your needs. Good luck!

I suggest to review also historical documents and collect the locations of all abandoned mine and a map (be care full with coordinate systems). Second layer could be the relief map (USGS) and the next one the current surface water map. Finally you can create a layer with pollution. After you can start with interpretation.

Surfer (from Golden Software) would be an ideal tool for this.

If your study is based on geochemical and altirmetric data, you can use GIS softwares (e.g. ArcGIS). You should create map/layer displays water quality using interpolation (e.g. kriging). Then, this latter should be superposed with digital elevation model (DEM) and surface hydrogeological map. Finaly, you can project the mining location and interpert the results obteined.
