Principle Investigator v Principal Investigator.
I've seen these two terms used to describe the head (the so-called PI) of a research project/group/lab.
Is there any specific difference between the two? Or, is it just a matter of style?

Principle investigator, is only responsible for the project, basing on his expertise, various academic funding agencies in our country. Prof. Brown assessment is right. Perhaps principal investigator, may be overseeing, different projects, with administrative powers and accountable for sanctioned funding. I didn't heard about principal investigator.
Principle investigator is the authority to do activities and capacities of the Project. Principal investigator is the Person who running a lab or in-charge of the institution of that project
i think it should be principal. But it depends on the funding agency. Some actually use principle.
The correct phrase is "Principal Investigator."
A principal is a chief or head.
A principle is a rule, a law, a guideline, or a fact.
The two words are not interchangeable.
It is a spelling mistake, principle is a fundamental truth or proposition that serves as the foundation for a system of belief or behaviour or for a chain of reasoning.
