You can also check with SCImago; they provide lists of academic journals and their impactor factors. With that, you can identify which of the journals are predatory and the ones which are not.

Largely unknown a decade ago, there are now an estimated 8,000 predatory journals collectively publishing more than 400,000 research studies each year. These journals offer to rapidly publish research findings, typically at a lower cost than legitimate journals, but do not provide quality controls such as peer-review. Predatory journals are also difficult to search, meaning that health-care providers and researchers can rarely learn from the data in these journals.

Researchers from The Ottawa Hospital and the University of Ottawa analyzed 1,907 research papers published in 220 suspected biomedical predatory journals. The journals were randomly selected from well-known but controversial lists compiled by University of Colorado librarian Jeffrey Beall.

They found that the top countries publishing in these journals were India (27 percent), the United States (15 percent), Nigeria (5 percent), Iran (4 percent) and Japan (4 percent). The U.S. National Institutes of Health was the most frequent funder mentioned among the very few articles that credited one.

"Our research debunks the common belief that predatory journals are only a problem in low income countries," said senior author Dr. David Moher, a senior scientist at The Ottawa Hospital and associate professor at the University of Ottawa in Canada. "Predatory journals publish research from scientists around the world, including those based at prestigious high income institutions."

The authors note, however, that their results should be interpreted in the context of the overall scientific output for each country and institution. For example, the United States publishes more research than any other country, and the vast majority is in legitimate journals.

The researchers also attempted to judge the quality of the suspected predatory journal papers using adapted versions of widely accepted reporting guideline checklists.

Yes they are a problem but mainstream journals are partly responsible for this they are delaying the normal publication turn around time!

you perhaps are getting emails "send your valuable researcheS", or similar. Just check everything they write - and you will find non-existing databases, fake IF's etc.

This problem is really very serious.

Typically, these journals promise very fast publishing - even up to 2-3 days.

Some of these "journals" do not even publish the paid articles at all.

The best way to avoid all threats of predatory journals is to submit your papers in journals you know well and where your colleagues mainly publish their papers. We are interested in the responses of our colleagues - their comments, citation of our papers, the discussion when we meet at some scientific meetings. The predatory journals do not provide these things. Of course, there are some negatives in submitting papers in "regular" journals, such as the delays in publication. But we should pay for everything. The quality of the journals is the main target, I believe.

The old Beer's list helped with open access. It has been taken down, but still can be found, maybe not updated. Look to see if indexed in Medline.

TO my understanding, it is always good to avoid unsolicited invitations from journals you haven't heard of.

Additionally it is always advisable to check if the journal is pubmed indexed.

Some journals claim to be indexed in Medline, but when you search, you find only one or two articles or maybe it is only in PMC.

I think there is some list also that may be available.

I also think that Pubmed should be notified about these predatory journals indexed in disguise!

It would be great to share any good websites that enlist such journals. Also, it will be good if PubMed is also notified of such journals.

Thank you Dr. Biswas for the list of peer reviewed journals. I was told by one of my friends that even PubMed has certain journals indexed which are actually predatory in nature.

First point is published only in Scopus indexed journal

If any journal is asking for publication fee in any manner, withdraw the paper from the journal

There are a number of lists of so-called predatory journals. Possibly such lists are correct but wrong classification may be the case.

Probably it is better to check Schimago as proposed and check the impact factors.

Or to publish your thesis as a book with a publisher whose name sounds legit, but curiously you’ve never read a book from. If you are a researcher, you may have gotten tired of deleting badly written emails inviting you to be the editor of a new journal whose title sounds all too important but has nothing to do with your work. What’s all this and what are some simple steps for novices to avoid falling in the trap? Francesc Baró explains.

The first modern academic journal, the French Le Journal des Scavans, was published in 1665. Since then, and especially in the second half of the twentieth century, the number of journals (as pretty much everything else) has grown exponentially. As of 2015, there are a total of – take a breath - 36,442 (!) active journals.

In the last years, there has been a proliferation of open access journals. This is good. Knowledge should be open to everyone, free of cost. Private publishers such as Elsevier profit from the unpaid labour of authors and reviewers. They then charge Universities and anybody that wants to access articles exorbitant prices.

What about all those open access journals though, who unlike Plos One, have not built a reputation for themselves? How can you tell a trustworthy from a bogus journal? In many open access journals, you have to pay to publish. This has created a new problem – the proliferation of fraudulent or so-called predatory journals.

In India, UGC is providing a list of approved journals for publication otherwise published with reputed journal indexed with scopus or journal has well known editor and editorial board
