can any suggest a suitable solvent or mixture of solvent for the precipitation of Bisphenol -A based polymer.I tried many solvent and combination of solvent but I couldn't precipitate it
Have you tried chloroform to dissolve it first and then ethanol for its precipitation?
I am not aware of which polymers might contain the Bisphenol-A. But let's figure out this one is PC. The PC is stable in chloroform and the BPA is soluble. On the other hand, if this base polymer is an epoxy resin, they are usually stable with chloroform.
Sir, I want prepare a polymer by dissolving bisphenol A and an aldehyde (poly condensation reaction) in dmso, now i need to precipitate out the formed polymer from dmso using an appropriate solvent,i tried various combinations but failed @
Okay, let's comment on the options that you might have:
- Using non-solvents: I understand that you already used some non-solvents of the DMSO, such as water, alcohols, acetone or ethers. Also reducing their temperature to produce the precipitation.
- If this doesn't work, you have other options such as changing the pH adding an acid gradually while stirring.
- If this still doesn't work, you can salting out the solution adding NaCl or ammonium sulfate. The DMSO saturates and the polymer would precipitate.
- Using non-polar solvents for exchange or extract the polymer, where the polymer will not dissolve in, such as hexane. This can be also a good option
And remember to use always the temperature reduction to increase the chance of precipitation.
