I have an assignment due for May 10 in which I am asked to critically examine, concerning wider literature, the accountability of the Irish police force.
If anyone has conducted or knows of literature relevant to this question I would be grateful. Even if your knowledge relates to the police force of another country, it would be useful for comparative purposes.

I am sorry, but cannot really comment on the state of Irish policing.
There is, however, a growing volume of literature in the US. Based on my own studies, and personal experience as a police officer, I can comment that the state of police accountability here in the US is in a very sad state.
The overarching problem is that politics has infiltrated the US police organizations from all sides. Police officers are afraid to do their jobs because they are afraid of ending up in prison for doing it. Civilian politicians who hold oversight positions are not interested in justice or lawfulness, even less about Constitutionality, but instead on political expediency. When mayors order police organizations to stand down while cities burn is the most clear example that can be had.
Here is the dirty little secret no one seems to care about -police officers need do nothing wrong to receive complaints, or to be charged with violations of policy or even with crimes. Depending on who the officer is in relation to his/her supervisors (good officer or not is irrelevant) EVERY complaint an officer receives can end their career in policing all together. This is why we have such a shortage of police officers in the US. The last few years have only brought it to the surface.
It is a shame I missed this question. Lots of research is available and I do hope you do well in the assignment.
