My research experiment comprised 8 treatments replicated thrice.The first treatment cell was unpolluted control while the remaining 7 treatment cells measuring 0.9m square each were polluted with 500ml of escravous light crude oil with specific gravity of 0.866.Please what is the percent pollution for this study.

Olubukola ADETORO Lemea-Michael In this experiment, pollutants were spiked into real soils? Correct me if I am wrong. It would be quite complex to asses the percentage (g per Kg soil) since normally people would prepare artificial soils with 0 pollutants in containers and spike them with known pollutants. For example in the case of your pollutant, the weight per L of pollutant would be 866 g based on the specific gravity. If you spike a Kg of soil in a container with 10 mL of your pollutant, the concentration of pollutant would be 8.66 g per Kg or 0.866 g per 100 g of soil or 0.866% (v/w). In real soils, several 10 g of randomly grab samples would have to be done upon spiking (did you do any mixing) in the 0.9 square meter. You would have to sample top soils I guess, and measure total hydrocarbon using GC, after solvent extraction, based on total area of signals or Infra red analyser (https://www.bucksci.com/pages/total-hydrocarbon-analyzer) or by gravimetric analysis. Spiking unpolluted soils would spark ethical/environmental issues in case of runoffs from rain or pollutants affecting ground water and 500 mL x 7 of pollutants are a lot. Normally real world experiment (bioremediation) involving hydrocarbon pollutant should be based on actual spill pollution site.
