Mohammed A Samba re: using AI for proofreading for my article & affect on manuscript plagiarism
As Andrew Paul McKenzie Pegman mentioned, AI for spelling and grammar checking can be valuable tools in your kit but only to help you make decisions. Take great care with using AI and paraphrasing tools, especially as a means of 'getting around' plagiarism. Plagiarism involves uncredited use of the words, ideas, sequences, and structures of others, so even AI paraphrasing cannot help if your ideas are not your own. Proofreading is much more detailed than editing and the rule of GIGO (garbage in=garbage out) applies to AI proofreading. The tool cannot reason. It cannot do more than draw upon how it was trained. Always enlist your peers as readers and check and recheck.
As a managing editor, i've seen many articles have a high AI plagiarism due to paraphrasing or proofreading as the authors claimed. So take care of that downside of AI tools.
