How can plasma physics help in fight against coronavirus?
What fundamental research should be considered? E.g. copper as an antiviral agent can be deposited by plasma on textiles or face masks and prolong sterility:

Protective clothing and sterile textiles are currently in short supply. Treatment with ozone-generating plasmas (e.g. corona discharge) can prolong the use of clothing. Barrier discharges (DBDs), surface discharges or coplanar discharges, which are applied for hydrophilization in the textile industry, can also be used in the form of smaller panels (for gloves, face masks, etc.) to reduce the microorganisms.
How about using plasma for sterilisation of surfaces, especially of medical instruments in hospitals?
That’s a very good question which many people are thinking. The upto date research in the application of cold plasma against viruses are very low. We could build some devices to kill the viruses present in air or some surfaces. But killing the virus inside respiratory parts would really be challenging.
Maybe Plasma UV glow for sterilization, would require plasma UV emission in the range of 250-260 nm which is the most effective wavelength against viruses. However there are already UV sources used for that purpose.
DBD Plasma jets generated in humid air are rich in highly reactive oxygen, nitrogen, HNOx based radicals. These have a proven efficiency against bacteria and some viruses (efficiency against COVID-19 was not studied/proven yet).
These jets of air rich in reactive gas molecules can be passed over surfaces, objects, clothes, etc. for disinfection. The jet chemicals are are mild enough to be applied on human skin (but toxic for breathing - internal cleaning of lungs cannot be done).
The technology is well known and available but not in current use in public places.
Pulsed power magnetics fields can represent a solution to break the protective shell of the virus by applying this mag. field in that region in which the virus can resonate
It is possible that UV irradiation of surfaces and external areas of human skin will be an effective and inexpensive way to destroy the Covid-19 viruses. The UV method is well known and is often used for disinfection of air, complex surfaces and water in clinics or etc. Now many mercury lamps are produced, they create radiation in a necessary range of 0.16 - 0.4 microns. You need to take a mercury lamp and measure at what power and time of irradiation these new viruses will die, or use technical parameters from previous studies for all known viruses. I remember one time I had a bad flu, instead of medication, I just spent a few hours in the sun every day, and I was cured.
The new CPDIV19 " pneumonia" -contains a single-stranded RNA, so to work with UV to destroy it, you need
339-423 microwatt per second per square of cm2
of ultraviolet light with a wavelength of 254 nm to get 90% air disinfection by measurements.
https://pikabu.ru/story/dezinfektant_dlya_koronavirusa_7195447
https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/02786820500428575
The power of light decreases inversely with distance, so all viruses will die in 1 second inside a sphere with a radius of 1.4 meters at UV lamp power of 100 Watts. Based on the literature data in my previous letter, it is necessary to have a value A = 400 micro Watts per 1 cm2 = 4 W\m2 for 1 second. If you take a lamp with a power of 200 Watts, then all viruses inside a sphere with a radius of 2 meters will die in 1 second.
What is exactly the resonant frequency or wavelength to the COVID19 virsus ?

Dear Marvus, glasses in our windows did not pass sun UV. And in cloudy days we haven't UV in a street at all, because water don't pass at all ( so cloud has hundreds of tons of water). Mercury lamp emits a lot of hard ultraviolet which is effective, I have not yet compared and the proportion of it in the spectrum of sun.
Dear Moutaman, the number of patients is growing so fast that there is no one to investigate the data you are requesting, see this terrible exponent:https://www.arcgis.com/apps/opsdashboard/index.html#/bda7594740fd40299423467b48e9ecf6
Dear Jan, I know many international committees on earth pollution, but CO2 in the air continues to accumulate, as does pollution in ocean. But this viral exponent is certainly cooler and faster than all - probably God decided that humanity has already lived enough on this earth.
@Markus M. Becker, yes UV lamps can re-place such actions, but it will not looks better... First you need protect eyes, second several lamps are required to avoid shadows (it is rather hard technical task), third it will takes bit longer for disinfection + it will kill only one layer of the virus.
In hospitals UV lamps a used widely. They working over night in laboratories when no one in the room. Due to shadow areas other ways of disinfection should be used also.
Dear friends, the lamp is very effective because it will easily provide the required doses in 1 second. The Chinese measured doses to kill different viruses (see the article in the link). My calculations show that the lamp will provide these doses within a radius of 1.5 meters in just 1 second ! Let's add the fan, as suggested by Jan, and increase the coverage several times. Let's put the lamp on a cart with wheels so that it moves along the corridor - this will be very effective. An employee can walk in front and pull a cart with a lamp behind him, because he works 8 hours a day. The first years of my career are related to optics, and I worked with a lamp for several days for 8 hours with dark glasses - my eyes exist. Beautiful women go to sunbathe under such lamps on purpose, they are very glad. Markus special thanks for the addition-comparison of the lamp with the spectrum of the sun should be done and I will do it soon. I have read now from the Chinese paper that many viruses are broken by UV, but they are restored from the visible part of the sun, but we will kill them in a frooms !
We urgently need to provide ourselves with sunglasses, some people can use powerful UV lamps for disinfection of streets. Not all UV lamps have bright visible spectrum, you might not recognize the danger. Try to keep away from the people puling a cart if you do not have UV protecting glasses.
There is a theory that coronavirus spreads faster in dusty areas. Leonardo Setti reported about this in The Economist:
https://www.economist.com/science-and-technology/2020/03/26/airborne-particles-may-be-assisting-the-spread-of-sars-cov-2
For such cases, air disinfection or cleaning is very important. Plasma / UV disinfection in combination with an air jet can represent a perspective development for this purpose. Just for example: Titan 3.0 from DemaClenco (snow gun) has a flow rate of 10 liters per second. This can correspond well to the treatment time by UV iradiation. Systems combining air fan/blower with plasma UV can be developed and they can be a part of standard air conditioning or ventilation systems usually used for bigger rooms (shops etc.).
Generally there are at least 3 areas for fighting the pandemic:
1. Protect / heal people
2. Disinfection/cleaning of air (plasma UV / ozone, air cannons, jets ...)
3. Disinfection/protection of surfaces (e.g. plasma treatment, deposition, Cu coating on textiles, ...)
Cold plasma can kill 99.9% of airborne viruses

Summary:Dangerous airborne viruses are rendered harmless on-the-fly when exposed to energetic, charged fragments of air molecules, researchers have shown.
Dangerous airborne viruses are rendered harmless on-the-fly when exposed to energetic, charged fragments of air molecules, University of Michigan researchers have shown.
They hope to one day harness this capability to replace a century-old device: the surgical mask.
The U-M engineers have measured the virus-killing speed and effectiveness of nonthermal plasmas -- the ionized, or charged, particles that form around electrical discharges such as sparks. A nonthermal plasma reactor was able to inactivate or remove from the airstream 99.9% of a test virus, with the vast majority due to inactivation.
Achieving these results in a fraction of a second within a stream of air holds promise for many applications where sterile air supplies are needed.
"The most difficult disease transmission route to guard against is airborne because we have relatively little to protect us when we breathe," said Herek Clack, U-M research associate professor of civil and environmental engineering.
To gauge nonthermal plasmas' effectiveness, researchers pumped a model virus -- harmless to humans -- into flowing air as it entered a reactor. Inside the reactor, borosilicate glass beads are packed into a cylindrical shape, or bed. The viruses in the air flow through the spaces between the beads, and that's where they are inactivated.
"In those void spaces, you're initiating sparks," Clack said. "By passing through the packed bed, pathogens in the air stream are oxidized by unstable atoms called radicals. What's left is a virus that has diminished ability to infect cells."
The experiment and its results are published in the Journal of Physics D: Applied Physics.
Notably, during these tests researchers also tracked the amount of viral genome that was present in the air. In this way, Clack and his team were able to determine that more than 99% of the air sterilizing effect was due to inactivating the virus that was present, with the remainder of the effect due to filtering the virus from the air stream.
"The results tell us that nonthermal plasma treatment is very effective at inactivating airborne viruses," said Krista Wigginton, assistant professor of civil and environmental engineering. "There are limited technologies for air disinfection, so this is an important finding."
This parallel approach -- combining filtration and inactivation of airborne pathogens -- could provide a more efficient way of providing sterile air than technologies used today, such as filtration and ultraviolet light. Traditional masks operate using only filtration for protection.
Ultraviolet irradiation can't sterilize as quickly, as thoroughly or as compactly has nonthermal plasma.
Clack and his research team have begun testing their reactor on ventilation air streams at a livestock farm near Ann Arbor. Animal agriculture and its vulnerability to contagious livestock diseases such as avian influenza has a demonstrated near-term need for such technologies.

I thing that Ozone generated by DBD is a unique antimicrobial agent. In fact, it is the most aggressive oxidating antimicrobial agent known to man, it reacts to any organic compound by oxidizing double carbon bonds. Ozone could be used efficiently in disinfection of various types of hospital rooms, offices, doctors’ consultation rooms, quarantine rooms, medical equipment, hand sterilization if it is mixed with water, bed disinfection etc.
Dear colleagues,
I would like to know, how can I calculate the amount of enough power to kill coronavirus in a room? For example, some quote hospitals using this method in their rooms. I read in this topic about cm² or m², how can I know if these values are suitable to rooms (m³)?
Sorry, I don't have expertise in this field, I'm just having some ideas and following this topic.
Cold plasma could be used for bacteriological disinfection with no human tissue harm, but mostly used for food conservation, maybe only we need more experimental data in virus field treated by col plasma.

Finely, I believe that biomedical plasma treatment can also be efficient along with hard UV. The biophysical and biochemical principles of plasma-assisted disinfection and sterilization of coronavirus-contaminated surfaces, air and water in the given case will be the same as described in the scientific literature, see, for example, a review by Greg Fridman, Gary Friedman, Alexander F. Dear Naumov, thank you for your detailed contribution. There are UV LEDs with a range of 250-270 nm. What is their spectrum exactly and what is their power?
Hi Barbara Caldeira , It is not a simple task to calculate the power needed to kill viruses and sterilize a room. It depends not only on the volume of the room to be sterilized, but also on the UV source power and exposure time. If low pressure mercury vapor discharge lamps are used, then you would need to know the net output power of the lamps (different from the nominal wattage), the distance from the source, ambient temperature effects, a few degrees may affect the effectiveness of the UV irradiated, there may be other considerations, at the end it is not a trivial calculation. You can refer to the following:

Hope this helps.
Ya,
Biomedical plasma treatment aling with uv exposure may help. But depends on the exact uv wavelength.
May be normal mosquitorepelling bat with uv radiation (atmospheric plasma discharge) can clean the surfaces.
The problem in this case is on line analysis of reaction specially coronavirus. Plasma is very active to destroyed any organic molecule. I think plasma can help as a clean and enviromental friendly technology in fight against corona virus.

Non-thermal plasmas have been used for sterilization of surfaces from bacteria and certain viruses. There have been studies on the application of the influenza virus. Apart from that, the electrostatic interactions of viral proteins are one thing that needs to be taken into consideration. There are studies on protein-protein interactions and the effect of the environment on such interactions.
The method of isoelectric focusing is one methodology in which proteins are separated based on their isoelectric points by creating a potential difference across the medium.

However, in reality, the situation is more complex.
For example, although the enveloped virus HIV is very sensitive
to disinfection and is rapidly inactivated even at room temperature
without any treatment, the influenza virus (another enveloped virus)
can remain infectious for up to 48 h.
Orthopoxviruses (e.g., smallpox, vaccinia) and filoviruses (e.g., Ebola virus, Marburg virus) are all enveloped viruses that remain infectious for up to several weeks.
Furthermore, several studies have investigated the effect of plasma
on the inactivation of both enveloped and non-enveloped viruses.
Representative studies showed that nitrogen plasma generated by
BLP-TES inactivated enveloped viruses, such as the influenza virus
and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), as well as non-enveloped
viruses, such as the adenovirus.
The inactivation mechanisms of action of plasma remain to be
determined in many references.
The mechanisms depend on the types of gases used to generate
the plasma. In the case of nitrogen mechanisms depend on the
types of gases used to generate the plasma. In the case of
nitrogen gas plasma, at least three major mechanisms (reactive
chemical species, UV radiation exposure, and electric fields)
are thought to be involved.
Dear Tamara V. Tulaikova , in response to your question I can tell that I do not have such UV LEDs in hands, but they are commercially available (made in USA $200-$300). Typical AlGaN deep UV light emitting diodes @255 nm have a spectral width ranging from 245 to 275 nm (FWHM = 12-15 nm) and output power 0.4-1 mW (at 20 mA).
The last thing that is known is the achievements of SETi (part of Seoul Semiconductors), which made long-lived UV LEDs @255 nm with an output power of 3.5 mW and higher, which can already serve as the basis for effictive UV LED sterilization. Let's hope for quick progress in this field.
Sterilization of masks could be done with ozone which can be very easily produced by DBE discharge.
It is shown to be effictive against virus.

There are already a lot of products commercially available:

Recently Hydrogen Peroxide vapor was used, as can be seen here:

Ozone is too active, and it is known to destroy polymers, rubber, electrical cables, and of course living cells (not just viruses).

CAP contains ROS which have been found to kill cancer cells preferentially because they have lower threshold to them and perhaps oxygen singlet reacts with water in lungs and create H2O2 and inactivate virus there. Therefore, there is crazy and silly idea to let a patient breath plasma discharge products. However, one need to take care and avoid biochemical damage. The most concerned toxic gases are (1) Ozone; the permitted exposure limit is 0.3 ppm for 15 min. and 0.1 ppm for 8h continuous inhalation; and (2) NO2 and NO; the limits are 5 ppm and 25 ppm, respectively for 8 h continuous inhaling. Compiled idea is based on information mentioned in this reference: S. Kou, Cold atmospheric plasmas, Their Use in Biology and Medicine (2019) World Scientific.
Good question Dr. Jan Schäfer!
I would like to share this information with you:
'' 7 things that COVID-19 fears:
1-UV.
2-Temperatures higher than 56 degrees celsius.
3-Ventilated air
4-Chlorine disinfectants
5-Alcohol 75%
6-Frequently washed hands
7-Strong human’s immunity system. ''
Probably; the cited solutions or recommendations (of course there are usually some compromises ) give inspirations to some of you to think about innovative ideas (should thinking about cost effectiveness, easiness, practicability and so on).
Markus M. Becker makes a good point in that it is the virus (SARS-CoV-2) that should be the focus of this treatment. COVID-19 is the disease and what should be alleviated rather than the actual cause.

Maybe also crazy and silly idea:
Plasma discharge products are also negative oxygen ions, which can be be added in a certain amount to the oxygen that patients breathe
Dear Marcel Mesko, the idea on the plasma inhalation may not be wrong in principle. Thank you for this contribution to the discussion here!
In Italy, an experimental success of ozone therapy has been reported by Dr. Amato De Monte (Hospital in Udine, Italy, 6.April 2020):
https://www.repubblica.it/salute/medicina-e-ricerca/2020/04/06/news/coronavirus_l_ozonoterapia_evita_la_terapia_intensiva-253290022/
Indeed, ozone is one of the gas products from many atmospheric pressure plasmas. Plasma ozonizer was developed by Werner von Siemens already in 1857 (https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ozongenerator). How symbolic 'corona discharge against corona virus'...
For this application, however, it is strongly recommended to use appropriately certified (plasma / ozone) sources so that the exact dose of the products can be controlled, because of toxicity of ozone at a higher dose. Many plasma jets are already characterized with regard to the ozone concentration, see for example:
Article Detection of ozone in a MHz argon plasma bullet jet
Antimicrobial agents can indeed be incorporated in textiles and masks and prevent infection diseases, but several requirements have to be taken into account:
1- we have to find the specific and highly effective antimicrobial agent to SARS-CoV-2, preferably already approved by FDA so that a quicker response is find.
Although some previous studies report the effect of copper against other strains of coronaviruses, effectivity against SARS-CoV-2 is not yet 100% sure. There are also several claims on silver based agents, but some evidence and real gain has to be carefully evaluated and validated.
2 - the use of appropriate methods for the immobilization of the specific antimicrobial agent so that the proper amount can target the virus and less amount is delivered to environment is also a priority. Leaching and excess from the immobilization processes will cause a lot of problems related with other strains, in particular by augmenting potential resistance of bacteria. Nowadays everyone is using disinfectants and antimicrobial agents are included in detergent and disinfectants formulations, which will turn into a big issue with regards with ecotoxicity and bacterial resistance in the near future.
A proper immobilization process is therefore very important. Plasma can activate the surfaces augmenting reactivity and grafting specially in polypropylene and polyester based materials currently used in EPIs, which might be a way perhaps together with crosslinking.
3 - controlled release systems are normally more appropriate for implants. In textiles for external use, as a mask, it is better to have a contact killing effect because this will prevent the effect described above in 2., i.e. bacterial resistance. We have to find ways of killing SARS-CoV-2 without compromise the effect on other species as highly pathogenic bacteria.
We are designing several strategies, mostly biomimetic ones so that the above described consequences of using antimicrobials are reduced, to continue our research on antimicrobials in this case antiviral targeting SARS-CoV-2. We are all still learning.
I've read about using NO for inhalations to treat affected lungs, and has been some research in the past few years about plasma-facilitated production of NO, in particular, in arc discharges. Any ideas about it, or any recent relevant research? The paper I have seen was experimental, but it's interesting to know if there is some modeling as well.
Dear Maria Tudorovskaya , indeed, this is really an idea which should be investigated systematically and in more details in relation to the coronavirus. Many studies are known in the state of the art which describe particular species from plasma and their biological effects (incl. O3 and NO), see e.g.:
Article Reactive species in non-equilibrium atmospheric-pressure pla...
There is also quite lot published about the microbiological effects of plasma, see e.g.:
Article Microbiological Interactions with Cold Plasma
Here, in the discussion, Marcel Mesko commented on the idea about inhalation of O3 and NO and he suggested a very interesting book published recently:

Hello Jan
Yes, many scientists are struggling to give solutions. We must thank them.
I also don´t know the technology involved. Perhaps incorporated in the nanofibers. Antiviral claim not necessary include human coronavirus; standards does not require it. I´m sure that if they have been tested against them, the claim would be there and highlighted. Since cooper as shown efficacy for some human coronavirus, it may work but not necessarily against SARS-CoV-2. Anyway, antiviral Log 3 reduction is very good. Great contribution!

Does someone know the resonant frequency or range of frequencies to destroy the virus? I will have a look at the Data Portal mentioned by Markus Becker. I developed a theory that is able to calculate the optical responses of simple or complex devices, for example, blue-emitting AlGaN superlattices. This theory can be used to design devices emitting at the required frequency or frequencies. I do not have experience with light-biosystems interaction, however, if these tools could help to Agata´s project, I am open to a wide collaboration.

Since cold atmospheric plasma has the ability to kill cancer cells by producing plasma reactive species, it is likely that this method (RONS) could also be effective in eliminating the covid 19 virus.
I think, any plasma generator is not better system to the disinfection of Colona virus for the ambient air without of risk for health. In Japan, some companies selling that system, so called Cluster Ion Generator or Nano-e Particles Generator to disinfect the room air. But recently, the usable effect to the virus was completely denied by the authoritative research institute except of production of trace of ozone. On the other hands, PM 0.2 adds another risk for the number of deaths by virus. I believe that the irradiation of deep UV by LED to the surface of the particle trap filter is most effective system on the point of view of cost and low risk for the filtering of the ambient air.

Convalescent plasma therapy can help in treating COVID-19 infected patients upto somewhat extent. The main problem lies in mutation of the SARS-coV-2 in various forms i.e its replicating itself in different forms because of which its becoming difficult to find a vaccine to cope with COVID-19.
Dear Masuhiro Kogoma , thank you for the valuable report and experience regarding air disinfection by means plasma generators, in particular in Japan. In my opinion, whether there is a health risk or not is the question of implementation. Are the plasma products introduced into the ambient air, or is the air extracted from the room and blown away via a 'plasma filter' (no direct contact of the exhaust gases with people)? Some manufacturers of 'plasma hoods' supply the systems for kitchen areas and thus promise to neutralize the smell. Sure such plasma technology can be used as a decontamination method for the air. We just have to look carefully at how the exhaust gases are handled. In the case of UV (cheap), contact with human skin and eyes must be avoided (risks of cancer or cataracta) and the shadow effects should also be taken into account in stationary use of such lamps. In addition, some materials can also be affected by UV radiation, too. In this context, I belief that a permanent plasma filter can already be used in the air conditioning systems. Can someone recommend practical systems?
Following. Could be used carefully. Otherwise more damage than good may be done
Hello to all friends. Based on the cold plasma of the DBD, we have developed equipment that can be placed in the ventilation outlet of the hospital and prevent the entry of air containing viruses into the surrounding space. Each of our DBD cells consists of hundreds of single DBD cells. Infected air passes through this DBD plasma. This has been piloted and we are testing the output air assessment. Please comment.
I think Terahertz Radiation are more appropriate for this purpose !!!
I suppose, xenon flash lamps, based on the high current arc discharge, can also be related to plasma physics. They are widely used by our company (https://melitta-uv.com) as sources of UV radiation in a wide spectral range for disinfection purpose. Our SARS-CoV-2 experiments showed excellent results.
I suggest, specifically "negative plasma ions" (which also contain negative oxygen ions and/or trioxygen/ozone) can kill coronaviruses (including SARS-CoV-2).
These kind of ions are very reactive attacking DNA/RNA and also proteins on the outside (skin) of the coronavirus in such a way that the "identity of the virus" becomes damaged or destroyed.
That is my explanation.

Dr. Jan Schäfer,
In the search for an optimal form of cold plasma we have developed a passive process for generating and providing long-term accumulation of a new form of plasma with properties different from those described for plasma generated by external energy input. Please see link above. Your comments are welcome.

My explanation:
Similarly, in cave spaces without impurities, aerosols, the formations of ion channel fibers with the same number of positive (H+) and negative (OH-) ions, the formation of fibers with small molecular cluster ions (diameter nm) arise. Water molecules bind to these structures, which make the charge structures at a certain local air temperature stabilized before recombination.
Functional coating of the masks developed at Toronto University combats the corona virus efficiently as reported in the news this week:
https://www.utoronto.ca/news/u-t-tests-show-canadian-made-mask-deactivates-99-sars-cov-2-virus
Can anyone provide more details about the technology used?
UV-C radiation can be thought of a process to disinfect most of the surfaces to prevent the attack of SARS-coV-2.which,can be a part of the plasma physics too.
Went through the article on functional coating for 99%removal of covid 19.
Thanks dr. Schaffer for the information.
