I have a pretty unusual but serious question.
Are photoreceptor outer segments (OS) physically connected to one another? If this is the case, would it be hypothetically possible (even rarely) the OS can form a kind of a layer when separated from inner segments (e.g. in retinal detachment)?

Maybe I will put it differently.
Do you know how exactly RPE microvilli behave in retinal detachment (is it possible that some of them are still connected to outer segments?) and how they regenerated and establish new connections with outer segment after reattachment?
