Gravitons and photons can be seen as expressions of a phonon field, illustrating our interconnected universe. Consider phonons differently by looking at motion differently and comparing the universe to a cartoon on TV.
A cartoon on television can be made by rapidly displaying a series of cels (still pictures). The cartoon appears to be in motion but the only movement is from the display of one still picture to the next (compare Eadweard Muybridge's 1879 zoopraxiscope, an important predecessor of the movie projector).
In a similar way, phonons would not be the foundation of physical information. Their quantized vibrations would be the result of rapid display of more basic "still pictures" (I imagine a holographic universe could make these displays). Suppose these more basic stills are the two-dimensional (2D) Mobius strip and the figure-8 Klein bottle immersed in three dimensions (its constituent Mobius strips could be coded for by energy impulses providing information in the form of BITS aka binary digits). The figure-8 Klein bottles could be projections (holographic-universe style) from the information in 2D Mobius strips and Wick rotation could account for that mysterious thing we call time.
In this manner, we'd end up with the following paragraph in Graviton-Photon Interaction and Mass Generation: A Vector-Tensor-Scalar Geometry Approach - Preprint Graviton-Photon Interaction and Mass Generation: A Vector-Te...
This article was co-written by Alessandro Rizzo, a colleague on ResearchGate, and myself. I mistakenly thought mentioning it would serve as acknowledgement for the inspiration he gave me, both in that article and in reference to this discussion's phonons. However, written acknowledgement of that inspiration is more appropriate and I gladly give it - along with a link to his recent article (17) (PDF) IT FROM BIT. The Foundations of the Theory of General Singularity. Unifying Energy and Information in the Fabric of Reality. (researchgate.net).
"This reinterpretation of quantum certainty finds an analogy in the precision of electronic binary digits, which can represent the "on" or "off" states of electrical pulses. Consider a Mobius strip, a two-dimensional object that can be represented digitally. Combining two such strips forms a three-dimensional Klein bottle, a model for the intertwining of dimensions in spacetime. Envisage trillions of these forms representing photons and gravitons, the basic building blocks of electromagnetism and gravity. Their interactions could give rise to all forms of matter and energy, and possibly even additional dimensions where Dark Matter and Dark Energy reside."
