In a touching memoir of her beloved brother Franz Brentano in 1918, Claudine remembers that “he was immensely gifted in every field … his violin teacher always commended his progress, even though he had no time to practice… in Munich, for a certain time, he took painting lessons with the Gelden countesses … he loved and mastered all games; chess was his favourite”. All these abilities were sided by a great personal piety and love for the others – to the point that his sister describes him as an “always pious and humble boy” from whom she learned “to visit the ailing, to help the poor, not to search fortune in the world; I even think that the seed that God planted into me was brought to maturation and flourishing by him”. He was also gifted with an innate propensity for literature, music, painting, singing, mathematics. It is not by chance that his spiritual mentor and private tutor was Joseph Merkel, in 1811 professor of encyclopaedia, philology and archaeology

Maybe “contained” isn’t quite the right word, but there were certainly a lot of overlaps and shared interests, and mutual influences. A good deal of the psychological literature of the latter 19th and early 20th Century reads like philosophy; Franz Brentano’s Pyschology from an Empirical Standpoint (1874) is clearly a work of philosophy. In the 19th Century there was a close connection between psychology and philosophy of mind because of a shared methodology, namely introspection. Many psychologists also identified themselves as philosophers and also pursued other philosophical interests that were not psychological in nature. When introspectionist psychology gave way to behaviorism, this was mirrored in the rise of logical positivism in philosophy; this time there was a shared ideology. The present-day Journal of Philosophy was from 1904-1920 known as the Journal of Philosophy, Psychology, and Scientific Methods. Nowadays the overlap and mutual cross-fertilization between philosophy and cognitive psychology (as well as several other disciplines) continues in the field of cognitive science. Some of the so-called qualitative research in psychology is virtually philosophy; likewise for so-called theoretical psychology or metapsychology.
