Hi, I am a chemical engineer with a background in biomedical engineering. I want to know if it is proper or good enough to change my research area and major frequently. Because you know, chemical engineering is basically about petroleum and petrochemical engineering and processing chemicals. But I decided to go into a major of chemical engineering that involves health and biomedicine, like tissue engineering and biosensors. And now I’m interested in another emerging field: the combination of biological engineering and data science. I love creating and designing, and I want to try my chance in synthetic biology. Also, I’m still in a chemical engineering school, but at the PhD level. Can I set my PhD thesis about synthetic biology, while I’m studying and affiliated to chemical engineering? Is it going to be a good idea, or do you suggest for me to change my discipline and go to another school? Is it obligatory, or maybe you can suggest that I stay in my own field that I have enough experience and basic knowledge about? Is this level of desire to pursue new things something proper and usual and considered fine, or is it a disease that I should avoid? Thank you for your patience and your kind responses, my dear friends.
