I need to perform patch clamp exps with fast perfusion system to study ligand gated channels in the whole cell configuration. Could someone suggest a good fast perfusion system? I was thinking to the biologic system, does anyone have experience with this brand?
the perfusion system produced and distributed by Cellectricon called Dynaflow Pro II is amazing. Expensive but amazing and perfect for your experiments...
I've used the fast perfusion system from Warner Instruments and it worked just fine. I was able to control it using the HEKA Pulse software.
I've found the ValveBank from AutoMate Scientific very good: http://www.autom8.com/valvebank.html The customer service is also great, I had a system suddenly stop working and I received a new one within 48 hours of letting them know.
I am also a BIG fan of a system built by Ivan Dittert that allows very rapid perfusion with heating/cooling, I can't find a website for it, but here is a link to the paper http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/16129494 and Ivan responds rapidly to emails - a small company means great service! Plus the price is very good compared to what bigger companies often offer.

I suggest you pay attention to the material the valves you choose are made off. Since most solutions you use will contain lots of salts, corrosion is the enemy for metal valves. Alternatively, teflon valves are more resistant to the salts. Warner indeed has both types.
For local fast perfusion we are using the Toohey Spritzer Pressure System (Toohey Company), there you can adjust your pressure quite well. In some cases the pressure is still too high and you are loosing your seal, so we take the Cell Tram System (CellTram Oil, eppendorf). Here you can apply your drugs manually and very carefully.
If you are testing isolated cells, a do-it-yourself system that is rapid, cheap and effective is the y-tube system that you can make in half an hour out of readily available PE tubing or teflon tubing if your solutions require it. Advantages beyond the price and ease of generating multiple copies are the rapid "concentration clamp" that one achieves (complete exchange in about 20 ms) but also the ability to perfuse with a control solution which many of the other pump systems cannot readily achieve. Disadvantages are the relatively larger volumes required and the intrinsic dead space in the tubing loop. Still all in all this is a remarkably well performing and reliably system that is nearly free in cost and infinitely replicable.

It depends a lot about what you call a "fast perfusion" system. Indeed a DIY system may fit your needs, for instance mine is calibrated to 3-4 ml/min but it could be faster. It also depends a lot of the size/volume of your recording chamber, if its too small, a very fast perfusion may create artefacts/perturbations to your patch recording.
This is why I asked as to whether this was intended for isolated cells. This system works well with single cells but certainly would not be appropriate for a slice or a population of cells. 20 milliseconds is fast enough for many ligand operated channels for example but might not be fast enough for other processes.
Use Warner SF-77b. Going to scholar.google you will see that it was being used in hundreds of publications.
