Joints between metals that get dirty or oxidised can end up looking like semiconductor junctions with non-linear I-V curves. Other materials can do this too.
This means that it multiplies together any signals with currents across the join. If it is one signal it can square it. So you get harmonics and other mixing products.
If you don't understand this try representing the real signal as exp( j omega * t ) + exp( -j omega * t) and square it or multiply by another signal with different omega (omega = frequency * 2 * pi).
This can happen with a rusty bolt, for instance.
If three signals close together mix then one of the results is also close to the other three so can be in-channel and may be a big problem. This is third-order intermodulation.
Second order tends to be out of band but may cause EMC problems.
