Thin Metallic layers present anomalies related to the Optical properties of bulk materials, thin films Wave propagation, transmission or absorption. I want to know the scientific origin of these anomalies. Are these anomalies caused by the technics of elaboration, the experimental conditions or other reasons?
Could you elaborate a bit about "thin" and "anomalies"? What thicknesses and which "special effects" do you have in mind?

The only think I know on the topic is that, when the metal thickness becomes too thin, electrons are no longer as free as their are on the bulk, so that the optical properties are a little bite modified. But this sounds obvious.
The term "thin" refers to the nanometric scale. The anomalies I said are related to the Surface irregularities and crystalline order. They strongly influence both the scattered light and absorption of metallic films. If the disorder is present on a sufficiently fine scale, it also affects the band structure of the metal and hence its optical absorption. One of the consequences is the decreasing of the diffusion length of the minority carriers. How to use very thin metallic layers minimizing these defects?
