A question, why are you focused on energy?  The energy companies have little incentive to encourage competing technology development. The is a much easier route to the dealing with organic waste by converting it into chemicals.  Attached is a paper on such conversion.

The solid waste from Olive oil mills is used for more than 30 years as excellent source of energy. It is dried and castes then used as source of energy. It recomended to be used in cement rotary kilns incinerators. Middle east countries used this kind of waste as source of energy. This field I think needs to be investigated more to improve the effuency of WtE conversion.
