Design and formatting of online survey questionnaires can (and do) result in poor response rates and/or poor quality data. An example of poor quality data might be lack of variability in the responses. What are some of the other response related problems that have been identified with online surveys, and what suggestions do you have for avoiding these problems? I think low response rate and poor content of the answers are common problems. One way to overcome these issues is to give incentives such as giving access code for restricted materials for a short period of time, or voucher to purchase simple gift. etc.

I strongly agree with Dr. Muayyad as I went through this experience earlier with one of my projects

Take a look at the book by Dillman et al., Internet, Mail, and Mixed-Mode Surveys: The Tailored Design Method. It has a strong emphasis on techniques for achieving better response rates.

Thank you all so much for your responses, and for the links, book, and articles that you have provided. I will be going through these materials in the next few days. The answer to this follow-up question might be in the materials that you have suggested; however, the follow-up question concerns design and formatting:
Should a questionnaire with several sub-scales be formatted so that, for example, each of the sub-scales is presented on its own web-page...or should the entire questionnaire be presented on one web-page?
In a recent discussion on the matter, supporting arguments were offered in both cases... and each side claimed that participant boredom would be reduced. One argument was that scrolling down a long web-page induces boredom and elicits poor responses, while the other side claimed that continually clicking from one page to another does the same! Your thoughts?
(as i said, I will read the articles, etc...however, I would still like to understand the various viewpoints from forum members ;)

Dear Ruth, regarding the follow up question in my experience as respondent of online surveys I strongly prefer to answer in the screen without scrolling down the page. To click in a button to move forward is better to me and when I am the one who design the survey or manage it I always show a bar in order to the respondent knows how much pages (in percentage) remains to finish the survey.
