I do know of people who feel that the Western campaigns against exploitative corporate practices in the Third World are just a cover for protectionism.

It is generally agreed today that exploitation is a price that the underdeveloped , and to a lesser degree developing countries have to pay for socioeconomic progress simply because these countries lack the specialization and the capital to make the best of their natural resources in order to provide any solutions to the problems of environmental degradation and economic deprivation. However, by accepting Western exploitive corporate interventions , such countries can benefit from the so- called exploitation to overcome the serious problems they are grappling with.Therefore, to attain economic and social efficiency, it is necessary, at least initially, to receive foreign know-how and collaborative technical assistance to change the status quo.On this basis, I agree with your interpretation that "being out of the economic loop is worse than being exploited".

as someone from Latin america now working a lot in sub Saharan Africa I find the whole aid problematic very patronising even when well intentioned as your argument clearly is
