When bridging the development gap in the Global South it is of great concern that this development is sustainable. Agreed Sustainable development is... "development which meets the need of the present generation without undermining the ability of future generations to meet their own needs" (Grainger, A., 2004, pp.1). Agreed 'It is the role of many NGOs to teach the population of the Global South about sustainable development and supply them with the tools needed to do so'. Really?
Will that really overcome the development gap caused by colonialism originally?

I am convinced that teaching may have an impact in the short-term, but to overcome problems induced by "global warming" (e.g. changing rain and temperature pattern affecting agro-food sector, poverty trap due to limited access to markets, insufficient policies, etc.) more holistic approaches are required.
First off all we should understand local needs to design demand-driven research (...producing scientific output), which needs to be converted into actions that produce an impact on the long-term (...outcome). There exists a huge body of literature (...feel free to contact me), but in reality "projects" are often lacking in sufficient approaches to achieve long-term impact (...own experiences - I am scientist [...need to produce output in the short-term] and need to collaborate with NGO that are in place for long periods to ensure long-term impact by maintaining and up-scaling, but establishing a collaboration is often difficult (...own experiences). Thus, there might be a gap caused by colonization, but we should look forward and find ways to improve current situation.

Global warming has invariably questioned the sustainability of agriculture , both developing and developed countries . Development of ambitious programme like C-4 rice is a classical example to moderate possible negative impact of global warming on sustainability of agriculture .
