what has been observed these days is that a mild examiner is often preferred to an objective one a times because people lobby for the job and go to do it in such a way as to be invited next time! Objectivity may be thrown over board. What is your own view with a view to raising the standard of research writing in universities world wide?
Normally the formal procedures in gaining the academic title PhD are fixed in detailed regulations. An oral examination is normal part of the whole proceeding in European universities.
