Most African professors stop publishing soon after they have been promoted, is it due to lack of facilities or availability of research grants or non use of their previous findings of research or they got fed up due to distortion of the academic system in some cases ,etc?
Perhaps they want to relax and to spend time with their family.
not a good approach, at higher level there contribution is must for the society, those you relax should contibute
Not just African, but mostly all academicians want to achieve the highest rank as quickly as possible. This is due to the flaws in the academic system of comparatively low and rank based salary, retirement age etc. So once the status of professorship is achieved, they relax their endeavours and yes give more time to personal life.
It is selfishness of individual and sign of immaturity of responsible persons in third class nations
Promotion to a higher post in academics in Africa is based on number of article published and conferences attended. This encourages every academician aiming for higher post to go into intensive research in order to achieved that even when research grant isn't coming. In fact, most of us prefer being supervised by a supervisor below the rank of professor because they tend to work harder since they too need research papers and certain number of Ph D student supervised before they can be considered for professorship. However, some professors relax because they are given more managerial roles to play and involved less in research while some are less motivated and relax because they no longer need research for their career development.
Segun, u are right for those who are in a hurry to rise would prefer amateurs to supervise them rather than a seasoned hand professor and you end up getting mediocre knowledge. It takes time to grow and mature in academics if you would want to be a distinguished academic but if you prefer to be awarded a political doctorate you end up also rise to become a political professor. It is garbage in and garbage out and you can never your mark in life. After all there are professors AND THERE ARE PROFESSORS! It is left for you to choose which one you want in life!
