I always used the phrase Gulf of Oman when working along the coast of the Emirates but recentyl was told that this is wrong and I should use Oman Sea. So are both right? Or only one? What do I use in a publication?
I have never seen or used Oman Sea but political sensitivities are high in the region. For me the northern Indian Ocean is the Arabian Sea with regions such as Gulf of Oman, Gulf of Aden etc. There is a particular issue with Arabian vs Persian Gulf depending on which country you are in and political sympathies. Here in the UK we have long lived with La Manche /English Channel!!!!!
If you consider the western journal then you have to write "Gulf of Oman", but, in the case of middle-east journals/ conferences, you have to write it as "Oman Sea". it is like our "Bay of Bengal" and "Bongoposagar" (local name, in Bengali).
I have talked to the students from Iran and Iraq, and I have come to know about this fact.
I usually use the term Gulf of Oman. Recently, however, a representative of the Ministry of Information chided me for not writing Sea of Oman. Since my publication was official, I changed the name of this water body. Otherwise theGulf of Oman is written on many maps including those from Oman's NSA.
